John Shriner, a man that lives in “island time” John moved here to Fort Smith about seven years ago from Hawaii to help take care of his grandparents. Before moving to Arkansas, he worked for Apple Corporate (say whaa?). John went from working with Apple to selling insurance. As soon as he got on his feet in the insurance business he realized how much of an opportunity there would be having his own agency and not being tied down to a single company. He now represents 17 different insurance companies under the umbrella of Shriner Insurance Agency, which means there is more room to grow across the board, and he is arguably one of the most competitive agencies in this area. Being licensed for all of these companies also means when a client needs to find cheaper insurance, instead of having to find a new agent, he just finds them a new policy. It’s really a win-win for everyone! I don’t know about you, but I hate having to find someone new to work with! John is able to help people find auto, home, life, health, commercial and pet insurance. He can even help with home warranties! John is currently licensed in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Florida, and working on getting licensed in Hawaii and Virginia. His goal is to be able to sell insurance nationally, a big dream for a small business!
When asked what he’s learned from being a business owner he said, “it takes a lot of hard work, dedication and consistency” to run a business. There is no giving up, and you have to learn everything about marketing, branding, customer service, and more. Luckily, his time at Apple taught him that customer service and product knowledge are the most important things in having a successful business

John isn’t just an insurance agent though, he’s also really involved in the community. He tries to serve in one way or another every week, whether that’s going to a fundraiser, buying school supplies for Fill The Bus, being involved in church, or anything else. In 2017 he helped found the Fort Smith chapter of Civitan International. From the Fort Smith Civitan Facebook page, “The worldwide mission of Civitan International is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs, with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities”. John is the current President of the Fort Smith chapter, and was just announced as the District Governor-Elect for the Heartland District which includes the clubs in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. John is currently working on getting Campus (university) and Junior (high school) levels of Civitan started here in the Fort. If you’re interested in learning more about the Fort Smith Civitan Club, you can contact John through Facebook, email, or phone!
